Who would be stupid enough to have a pre-Xmas sale? Yep, you guessed it…

Friday, November 27th, 2009

The thing I hate about Post-Christmas sales is that they are post Christmas. I need to buy stuff now! I can’t tell my friends and family at Christmas “I know what I am going to get you but I have to wait until it comes on sale in a few days time”.

Screwed up retailers! Why can’t they think of me for once and do a Pre-Christmas sale?

Oh yeah. We are a retailer. Ooops. Wonder how we can fix this industry-wide problem.

Well, we can’t really put magazines on sale at any time. We make bumpkis on them anyway. What can we offer at a discount? Thinking. Thinking. Thinking.

I know – brainwave, flash of inspiration, lightbulb moment – T-SHIRTS!

"I JOINED AL QAIDA AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT" 20s and 10s T-ShirtChunk "Dark Sides" T-ShirtJeremyville "Dollars" T-Shirt

They are the only product in our stores with close to decent margins. There is room to discount those!

Ok. Done. All T-shirts in mag nation are now going to sell at $40. They all used to be $60. That is $20 off. We can do the maths.

Some of the coolest T-shirt labels in the world, including Jeremyville, 10 Deep, BKTM, Chunk, Syke, MISHKA, Mont La Roc, Sneaker Freaker and quite a few more, all now reduced BEFORE Christmas. Come down to our Elizabeth Street, King St Newtown and Ponsonby stores to buy them in the flesh, or take a look online. (Although, we’ve included postage in the online prices so they’ll range from $45 to $49 depending on where you are in the world and a bit more if you’re paying in NZ dollars!)

See – it easy being the Head of a retail company. Just think like a customer. And try not to go broke in the process.

T-shirt exhibition being held at mag nation

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

As part of the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, mag nation is holding a T-shirt exhibition on The Third Floor at our Elizabeth St store. This is an official part of the program people. It ain’t just us freeloading on an established event to push our own agenda. Well, perhaps there is a little of that too, but hey – most of you don’t even realize that we sell T-shirts and its about time you did.

Some of the best designer T-shirt brands in the land will be hanging their finest all over our walls, and it will be a sight to be seen. When we say “their finest”, we are referring in many cases to “one-offs” or next season’s never-seen-before designs.

And lending his weighty credibility to the entire event is Eddie Zammit, founder of T-world Journal and all round T-shirt nut (he owns over 1,400 T-shirts – we kid you not). Eddie will be speaking about T-shirt culture this coming Tuesday (1st Sep) between 6:30 and 7:00 pm on The Third Floor. If you would like to come along, you need to RSVP at info@magnation.com. Given the interest this talk has already received, I am not sure how we are going to fit you all in, but not to worry – we’ll find a way.

If you can’t make it Tue night, you should at the very least get down during the week (or go up given you have to climb 2 flights of stairs) to check out the Ts. Just some of the brands represented include:

10DEEP
ALIFE
BKTM
Boski
Burn
Graniph
MKTW
Nique
Syke
Triumvir
Worn Free

This is going to be the best T-shirt exhibition in the history of the world* We seriously suggest you don’t miss out (the T-shirts will be for sale but we have 1 item of each design only so you need to be quick) – you will be kicking yourselves otherwise. Sydney – this is the sort of random stuff you can expect from us when we arrive there shortly. Yes, we are the galactic  experts in magazines, but we do other gunk too.

*Disclosure – we are blantantly exaggerating, but “damn fine” didn’t sound as impressive as “best in the world”. As long as we disclose it, this is alright isn’t it?

Why we don’t sell any T-shirts online (yet)

Friday, July 10th, 2009

There are some things we are really good at. We know it, you know it. Sourcing the coolest magazines and presenting them to you in an attractive way is just one of these things.

Yet, we are the first to admit that there are some things we are really crap at. Selling T-shirts online is one of these.

We have one of the best T-shirt ranges in Australia. This comes from the mouth of Eddie Zammit, a guy who lives and breathes T-shirts, and who is also the person behind T-world: The Journal of T-shirt Culture. Eddie knows virtually every brand in the T-Shirt world, and salivates when talking about the T-shirt range that we have managed to assemble at mag nation. Yet most of you probably didn’t even realise that we had this offering.

Put aside the physical retail and marketing challenge of selling T-Shirts. We are getting better at the first and will start on the second only once we are really happy with our physical set up. However, this is still only relevant to you if you are in Melbourne or Auckland (yes – we are now adding some Ts into Ponsonby). Given the combination of niche brands we have and the demand for each of these brands, we should be creaming it.

And yet, we are not. Take one look at how we have displayed T-shirts on our website and you will see why. It just looks bad.

This is by no means a reflection on our website developers. They did a brilliant job based on what we specified. Our problem was that we approached T-shirts from what we knew best… mags. Bomp Bow (that’s an attempted spelling of that “you lose” sound from Family Fued).

The images are way too small. The photography of the T-shirts is crap (I can say that because I took the photos), and the functionality is lacking. No T-shirt sizing guides. Only one image per tee. We could go on.

I am determined that we do well with T-shirts. We think it really fits in with our increased focus on popular design culture. We don’t want to compete with the “design it yourself” sites that are all about creating a T-shirt community for designers. We simply want to present really niche T-shirts labels alongside the other niche design and pop culture products that we love.

We have however learned a very valuable lesson through T-shirts. Sounds obvious, but if you are going to do something, don’t just do it well, but make sure it is world class. In the online world, nothing else cuts it given the global choice we are now faced with. And this is what we are now trying to do – be world class. We hope that in around 6 weeks’ time we will be able to look at our online T-shirt capabilities with the same pride as with other parts of our business.
