Mi Goals Diary 2013

Monday, October 1st, 2012

One of our most popular diaries has returned to our shelves in its 2013 guise. Designed and made in Melbourne, the Mi Goals Diary has established an extremely dedicated fan base in the couple of years that it has been around.

Adam Jelic, the designer and founder at Mi Goals recognised that each of us have goals in all facets of our life (both short term and long term ones) that need to be fulfilled. The Mi Goals Diary has been designed to help its user set their goals, and then achieve them. Each easy-to-use weekly layout contains a handy goal checklist as well as an inspirational quote to get you going. Some pics of internal spreads are included below.

The mi goals diary is available at all Australian mag nation stores or online from our sister store, Nation State here

Pretend to be a celebrity and win a Moleskine 18 Month diary

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012

Every year, around this time, we tend to see a massive run on our Moleskine 18 Month (Financial Year) diaries. I’ve never quite been able to work out whether the folks who buy these are extremely disorganised, and 6 months late buying a diary (maybe me) or just uber organised (definitely not me). In any case, regardless of the underlying reasoning, these babies are in particularly high demand at the moment.

Thanks to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes the Trash mags are also in high demand this week.  The “Other Magazines” as we like to call them at mag nation… those secret magazine mistresses that hide under the sofa while Monocle, Port and Harvard Business Review take pride of place on the coffee table… we know you love them – sales figures don’t lie.

Anyway, to commemorate the two trends above, we’re giving away 3 Moleskine 18 Month diaries of your choice, via our stationery and gift website, Nation State. For a chance to win, simply enter a made up (or real) diary entry that starts with Dear Diary, and ends with. Yours truly, Katie or Yours truly Tom

Please keep your entries to 50 words or less (excluding the mandatory Dear Diary, and Yours truly Katie/Tom). Post your entries as a comment to the Nation State Facebook page. The 3 entries with the most “likes” will be our winners! Should a Moleskine diary not be your cup of tea, we’ll happily send you a copy of your preferred weekly trash mag, undoubtedly featuring… well, you know who.  Winners announced 5pm Friday 6th July.

If you’re not one of the lucky winners, our full Moleskine 18 month diary range is available at all our stores or online at our stationery and gift store Nation State

Hungry Workshop x mag nation Mother's Day cards

Ever since we discovered Melbourne-based letterpress printers The Hungry Workshop a couple of months ago, we knew we wanted to work with them in some form or another.

Husband and wife duo Jenna and Simon Hipgrave both design and print the most beautiful array of printed material (cards, stationery, wedding invitations and plenty more!) on a 1970 vintage Heidelberg press discovered collecting dust in the corner of Brisbane-based printing shop which they hauled down to Melbourne on the back of a truck and had lifted by crane into their Northcote studio.

We’ve been stocking their range of cards in-store for a little while now, but when we saw Mother’s Day approaching we figured it’d be the perfect opportunity to collaborate on something special.

The result is these beautiful Mother’s Day cards which are a limited edition of 300, printed on 100% carbon neutral stock, designed and letterpressed with love in Melbourne.

Available for any online Mother’s Day subscription purchase (just select a card and add a message at the checkout) and in our stores for $6.95 each or $4.95 with any subscription purchase or as single cards at Nation State.

Thanks to Eamo Donnelly for letting us use his Hungry Workshop studio photos. Check him out over at http://www.islandcontinent.com.au/

Help wanted: Copywriter

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

We’re looking at expanding the range of products that we offer on our website (stationery, in particular) and generally trying to spruce up our online presence. With that in mind, we’re looking for a freelance copywriter to give us a hand writing product descriptions and other bits and pieces around our site.

What you’ll be doing…

Writing fun, interesting, witty product descriptions (did we mention sparkling and engaging?) for everything from Moleskine journals to the latest issue of History Today. It’s not a full time position—at this stage for looking for someone to join us on and off over the course of a month or two, but we’re totally flexible as to how that might happen.

You will…

  • Love design and stationery and designer stationery
  • Be able to work from home and work flexible hours (we promise this isn’t one of those weird scams) if that’s what works for you.
  • Live anywhere in the world, but ideally you’ll be in a similar time-zone to Melbourne or Auckland (that means you, residents of Vladivostok!)
  • Have a penchant for Dad jokes and an appreciation for our own brand of daggy humour.
  • Start really, really soon.

To apply

Drop us an e-mail, telling us a little bit about yourself. Please include three sample product descriptions for the following products, between 100 and 300 words.

Rock and roll, cabrones!

Update 04/03: It’s been brought to our attention that we neglected to leave a closing date for applications on here. We’d like to get the ball rolling on this as soon as possible, so the deadline for applications is… as soon as you can get it to us.

Update 07/03: We’ve had so many great applications! Thanks everyone. Applications are officially now closed. We’re reading through all of these today and will getting back to everyone shortly.

Moleskine Hacks

Moleskine classic ruled notebookMoleskine classic address book

We sell a lot of Moleskines. Like, actually… heaps.

So many, that sometimes it’s hard to wonder what people actually use all their 15 different notebooks for.

Anytime I’ve ever had one, I’ve written on about one or two pages and then been so overwhelmed by the prospect of scrawling my insignificant thoughts on such nice paper, wrapped in such a beautiful binding that I just sort of savour looking at it for a while. I want to stroke the leather, rub it up against my cheek, spend an hour or two sniffing it… and by the time I have written a few notes in it, I’m about ready to buy my next one.

Browsing Merlin Mann’s ‘productivity blog’ 43Folders today, I came across this great post on ‘Moleskine Hacks‘. From keeping a spare $20 in the pocket for emergencies to using your Moleskine as a dream journal, there’s plenty of great ideas here at how you can get the very best out of these fantastic notebooks.

And as to whether Van Gogh actually had one of these, well, the jury’s still out on that…

The Love Seat is dead… Long live the Stationery Nook!

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

A controversial change overnight in our Elizabeth Street store as the ‘love seat’ alcove next to the counter (long a favourite of amorous, magazine loving couples) has been removed to make way for what seems set to become known as… ‘The Stationery Nook’. (Although I still refer to this area as the “old alcove” or the “old love booth”!)

As we stock more and more amazing stationery (Rhodia, Moleskine, O-Check, Night Owl, etc.) it’s become necessary for us to use all the space available to us to showcase our wares.

And if that means canoodling couples have to find more public parts of our store, then we’re just gonna have to wear that. The Nook (now that is a better short version) will be surrounded by stationery once the sophisticated masking tape holding the walls in place is removed, and also makes use of artificial grass which is a current infatuation of mine. I put it in the T-shirt changing room and by the windows on The Third Floor, but people seem to prefer comfy armchairs than little patches of fake grass. Go figure. Anyway…

Rest in peace dear love booth. We hope you are happy in whatever place iconic features of cool retail stores end up going when the are replaced by new iconic features of said retail stores.

Yes, we sell O-Check stationery

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Regular visitors to our stores may have noticed that we’ve slowly begun stocking a larger range of stationery, as our customers ask for it more and more. We’re selling the French brand Rhodia (allegedly a favourite of Francis Ford Coppola), an ever increasing swathe of Moleskines and a cute Korean brand called O-Check that we’ve been remiss to not mention here before now.

According to our suppliers:

The name ‘O-Check’ is derived from the Korean word ‘gongcheck’ which translated literally means ‘a book with nothing inside’. Substituting a zero for the word ‘gong’ O-Check captured the essence of its notebooks which upon creation are empty, but come alive when filled with words, thoughts, feelings and drawings.

Which, um, pretty much says it all really!

We’ve got a huge range of their notebooks (both softcover and hardcover), decorative sticky tape, travel diaries, pencil and eraser sets, a beautiful leather pencil case and lots more!
